Well, quiet in comparison to the golf tour. Mellon’s birthday was most certainly the opposite of calm. There was a bit of golf, a couple of treats, a sprinkle of good intentions, a few travel plans, and a bit of salt water.

Mellon’s birthday kicked it all off. Up until that Friday I’d kept it very tidy, besides a little Thursday night slip up at Peddlars which involved a few of my friends you may know, Tequila and Jameson. The Friday though, was huge. By 5pm Mellon was already well on his way. We did our best to catch up, and by the time we hit Aces, after the customary pre drink at Brewers, things were getting loose. After that it was back to Home Bar…until sometime after 7am.

For some reason I felt completely fine the next day, and spent it chilling in the burbs, something I’ve found myself doing quite often of late. Sunday started well with a very early game of golf, which ended in a lunch, which almost ended in a drunken night out in Kalk Bay, but common sense prevailed and an early night was had. The thought of starting another week on the back foot was too much to handle.

I’ve attempted a healthier week this week. A bit of running again, and the Green Juice Of Awesome is back. It’s a bit of a last ditch attempt to make the impending 26km, 2 day Table Mountain hike with Sedgwick’s a little easier on this, regretfully, gin soaked body. Looking a little further though, I’ve even agreed to enter into a gym partnership with @SiWibb. It’s about the only commitment I’m willing to get into right now.

Other than that…I picked up a rad camo jacket at The Lot. They’ve got a few new items in, all of which I’d like to get my hands on. My board size at Muizenberg is finally dropping, which means I’m a little closer to my goal of not being an old bodyboarder (or at least be able to stand up as well). The highlight of my week, and possibly month, has to be the fact that I finally tried the KFC Double Down. It was fantastic! I was drunk, but I’m confident I read ‘Best Before: Sober’ somewhere on the packaging.

Oh yes, other highlights include the possibility of me going to Amsterdam and Germany in the new month, bar any catastrophe with my visa application (the only reason I use ‘possibility’). I’m freaking out a bit. A lot actually. I have to keep telling myself that I’m a functioning adult and adults don’t just get denied travel visas. I just want it to happen so much that it’s freaking me out. It’ll be Biffy Clyro, Muse and Neil Young in Amsterdam, then Rock Am Ring Music Festival in Germany, with another 99 999 people.

Tomorrow we leave for Noordhoek at 7am, hike 16km, camp on the mountain, then hike another 10km across Table Mountain on a wild and unruly sherry hangover. I haven’t been so excited about something in a while. I’ve always wanted to do an extended hiking trip. The rest of today will be spent packing and repacking and rolling the essentials. I’ll fill you in again when I get back.

The video below is still raw, which means you get to hear the how powerful the wave actually is, and see how fast it is. No matter how many times I see this wave break, I still can’t get my head around what it must be like to be in a bad situation on a day like this.
