My Thoughts On Kings Of Leon in Cape Town
For some reason there seems to be a huge difference in opinion on last nights show. Explaining mine on Twitter is useless, 140 character just isn’t enough to get it all across. Plus, for some reason, possibly the hangover, I’m starting to get fucking annoyed with people, as I tend to do, because as we know, everyone is an idiot. I have several conflicting opinions on last night, but at the end of the day it was an amazing experience. Let me tell you why.
(my opinion after the jump)
Besides the crowd, which comprised of a multitude of morons, boozed up jock types and girls dressed up, on a chilly Cape Town night, like they we’re hoping We Are Awesome would show up, there was not much to comment on regarding the stadium, and general running of the night. It was done well. The queues were as quick as one would expect and everything seemed to run smoothly. I stayed away from the bars, they looked far too busy. I’d been taking my liquor in the bars of Green Point since 2pm, in places that ice cold bottles were brought to me by waitresses. The stadium bar queues and the inevitable need to urinate keeps me off the booze once the show begins.
Down in Golden Circle we found, much to our annoyance, that the majority of the Top 40 heroes – the kind that list their favourite bands according to their rank on the world charts, have little to no idea how a crowd situation works, and that bringing in fifteen of your friends to join you, in an already packed floor is going to earn you a punch to the face. My experience seem to fit in with most of the crowd comments I’ve seen today. In retrospect, I wish more fights had broken out, perhaps the organiser could have split the crowd into two teams and pitched us in a battle for the prime area in golden circle. The first team comprising of the generally good people, there to take in the music, the crowds, the excitement, and then the second team, comprising of everyone who was there to listen to ‘Sex On Fire’. The good people would most certainly have been outnumbered, but we sure as hell have experience in close quarter crowd combat.
I’m not going to get into the support acts. I missed the first two, only arriving as Die Heuwels Fantasties took the stage. Perhaps it’s because I used to like Die Heuwels, a while back, but started to doubt them after disappointing show after disappointing show, that last nights show was particularly enjoyable. Maybe my judgement was off because I’d written them off. Written them off to a drunkard front man. Maybe it was, but in my opinion, last night I witnessed the best performance from Die Heuwels in a very, very long time. Yes, they had some entertaining support from the likes of Francois Van Coke and Jack Parow, but all in all I really enjoyed it. I have faith in the band again. I want them to live up to their hype.
When it comes to Kings Of Leon I’ve heard just about every conceivable comment, via twitter, on last nights show. Some I don’t agree with, a few sum up the crowd perfectly, some are clearly from people who were not even there. Someone even compared KOL with David Guetta ‘David Guetta was so much better than KOL’. Sorry. What? That person deserves a punch to the face, and is a clear indication of what we were dealing with last night. A large crowd of people who went because there was a concert on. Who was playing was almost beside the point. I think what they were getting at though, was that KOL were not very energetic or engaging. They weren’t. As far as performances go, this show was weak. Few words were said, and they could have been said anywhere. ‘Hello Cape Town!’, ‘This is the most beautiful city we’ve been in’, and ‘ARE YOU HAVIN’ A GOOD TIME!’ are stock fucking standard and not only do we deserve more, they should want to give more.
It was, however, a treat to hear that Southern drawl every now and then, but I know everyone wanted more. We’re starved for current internationals. Of course we want more of a show. All we have are the albums, so when a band comes out and plays a near perfect set, it’s just not enough for us. Which it was, the set that is, near perfect. I have never heard a band play so well. Looking to our perfect performance bands here, like Isochronous, I can say I’ve heard skilful and perfect, but to see it on a scale like last night, and from a band like KOL, was something special. Say what you will of their stage presence, or set list, KOL destroyed last night, and if you’re a fan of their music, a real fan, not some popped collar dick head who prefers Sex On Fire – the dance version, who’s ticket was a reward from mommy for studying hard, they you would have appreciated the music.
Still, was that enough to save the performance from the lack of engagement, or the last ditch, fourth song into the encore, almost obligatory attempt at international showmanship, sparks and fireworks ‘display’? Yes, I think it was. Why? because at the end of the day I didn’t go to KOL to listen to Caleb Followill talk the whole night. If I want to hear what he has to say I’ll watch a documentary. I went to the Kings Of Leon concert to hear one of my favourite bands play the songs I fell in love with all those years back, and I wanted to hear them played well. That is exactly what I got.
Joburg, I fear for you, in terms of your crowd. If our Top 40 heroes are nothing more than annoying imbeciels, your’s are the same, just cranked up on juice. If you can avoid them though, you’re in for a bloody spectacular night. Don’t listen to the haters. Go there for your own reasons and enjoy the music, because good music is what you will get.
Nash…
Out.

Thanks for doing such a detailed review. The opinions on Twitter last night were so spread it that it was possible to actually deduce whether it was a good concert or not.
After reading around, it sounds like it was a great concert, but two common complaints were about the sound quality and the crowd, apart from that it sounds like it was sick indeed!
natasha
Hi Nash
I totally agree with you, the crowd was awful, they were not “real” fans, they were just there for Sex on FIre and Use somebody… I went to appreciate the music that the Kings make and enjoyed every minute, even having people stare because I was moving around in my seat too much… Eventually moved to a standing position and just enjoyed the awesomeness that are KIngs of Leon…
coolcat
I know six of the Kings Of Leon songs. That means I’m not a die-hard fan for them, but I enjoy their music. So don’t make it seem like the true fans are the only ones meant to be at these concerts. Trust me, then the crowd would be full of insane fans with very little diverse vibe.

Excellent review – I actually found myself sitting at one point like an old man because I could not handle the diamond-earring, tank top school kids drunken-bumping me.
You say it better here than I could in my own head.
coolcat
If you don’t want school kids around you, then don’t go to concerts. It’s their turn to experience. Most likely that the youngsters got General Standing, mainly because it’s affordable and they want to jam it up with their age-group. If you wanted a quiet show with your age group, get Golden Circle or seated.
KaB
Hi Nash,
The crowd sucked…I’m so tired of these stupid dressed up idiots who push and run around like a bunch of children at a high school party – it’s annoying and boring…I’ve become so disillusioned by the youth, they’re a bunch of prats really! That being said, the general feedback I’ve had today from peeps is that the golden circle was awesome, rest of the stadium not so much! The sound quality wasn’t great, the same can be said about Coldplay, I think Big Concerts are to blame for that, not KOL etc. In my opinion, as a fan (and not the just ‘Sex on Fire’ kind) I would have preferred to have seen them at Grandwest, smaller venue and personal would have been absolutely brilliant!
Sarine
Very well said, i’m a die hard KOL fan, for 9 years straight, long before the whole “sex on fire” hype – as a matter of fact, that’s the only album i DON’T have in my collection. Therefore i was struggling a bit this morning to decide what my opinion was about my first show of my favourite band, but i couldnt have summed it up better – thanks
kelly
Best comment I have read so far… Their new music doesnt even come close to the greatness of their previous albums…Biggest disapointment, no california waiting or milk!
Candy
Nash, you biscuit!
You are totally right. (I don’t say that often). I saw Kings of Leon twice in Australia. Before they were sponsored, slick and anywhere near a Top 40′s list. They were the best shows I’d ever seen in my life.
That’s why I didn’t go last night. Besides the fact that I’m premenstrual, aggressive and angry and would likely have murdered a peroxided carrot coloured 21 year old, I like to remember them just the way they were.
Romantic, after all.

Nice post Nash, im looking forward to the Jhb show . Can you tell me if they played Revelry? The song means a lot to me
nash
I’m happy to say they did.

Wicked cool, thanks guy
Darren
Exactly right Nash! The set was near perfect, haven’t heard a live act that good, ever! The crowd was the problem, too many plastics. The fact that the crowd was so quiet, when KOL played anything predating ‘Only By The Night’ speaks volumes. I thought the acoustics were pretty good in Golden Circle, vocally Caleb nailed it and the rest of the guys were faultless. If people wanted all the showboating, they’re better off at the Guetta gig. The performance was epic, and perhaps a smaller venue, as KaB suggested, would’ve made the experience better. for the real fans
nash
Man, his voice is out of this world. Never expected the vocals to be that good.
KaB
Absolutely!
The Given
Nice review man, just one thing, you can be a real fan and still like the “popular” songs.
Use Somebody was actually the wife and I’s wedding song, and hearing that many people singing along added a whole new level of special for the misses and I, but that doesnt mean I havent been a huge fan from the get go.
nash
Dude, I’m not saying that at all. I absolutely love their radio singles. It’s just an easier way to group the set of people I am talking about. The people who know nothing of KOL besides 3 or 4 songs.
The Given
Yea okay I prob just took it a little too in my own face, I know exactly what you mean…
I heard Instagram crashed several times during the concert last night
Nick
Perfect set-list, but the sound was off. Lead guitar was far too low, and there was a substantial lack of mid-range frequencies.
Some guy near me kept saying “More crowd interaction!” No. No crowd interaction. I paid to watch a band, not for the band to have a call-and-response bridge section. I don’t know what other people were expecting from KOL – maybe some Jared Leto-esque scaffolding climbing or whatever – but I loved it. They were class.
Johnny
Spot on dude! The moment Big concerts announced KOL is coming to SA in knew all the jocks and bimbos was saying “oo, is that the sex on fire band? Its my favorite!”. So I thought ill get a golden circle ticket because only a real fan would pay that kind of money for a ticket. I could have been more wrong. It felt like I was in a scene of jersey shore. Besides the crowd the moment KOL came on stage I forgot about the boytjies around me and they totally rocked it!
Joburg can look forward to an awesome show!
Ania
I’m not the biggest KOL fan but I’m a huge live-music fan, and it is my rule not to miss a concert if I can help it. I thought last night’s show was perfect. Unlike at Coldplay, I found the sweet spot at CT stadium – had the perfect sound, the perfect view and the perfect experience (number of drunk, dressed-up, underaged oxygen thieves is inversely proportional to distance from stage, as it turns out). I can’t believe people are whinging at Caleb’s lack of stage personality – if I wanted to listen to him speak I would have gone to the press conference and bypassed the concert… JHB fans are in for a treat, I’m jealous of how much they have to look forward to.
Rob
You couldnt have summed last night up any better
Ricki
I saw a 14 year old boy sitting on the floor vomitting on his shoes. It’s a pity he’ll never remember the night he went to see one of the best bands ever.
coolcat
Completely agree. Absolutely NO stage prescence, and i was surrounded by friends the entire night and wouldn’t say it was one of my best. And i felt that they didn’t put enough emphasis on their popular sings leaving the crowd a bit lost when they heard a tune they though they had recognized. Otherwise, a fair effort from KOL. Would have rather been there than not.
J
perfectly said!
I couldn’t agree more. KOL were incredible in the flesh.
Ed
I couldn’t agree more, they were faultless in terms of their performance. I could not believe that a band can sound that good, that polished live. I’m soooo glad I got to hear Arizona performed live…chills!
natasha
They actually played quite a few “popular” songs from their cds “By the Night” and “Come around Sundown” which are the cd’s which fans are probably more familiar with… but they have to satisfy their fans by playing some of their earlir stuff… which I really enjoyed..
Ed
Yeah I thought they balanced it well. Got to cater for everyone. But I was particularly glad that played Fans & Arizona. As “Because of the times” is an album is simply cannot live without

Highlights of your review:
“‘Hello Cape Town!’, ‘This is the most beautiful city we’ve been in’, and ‘ARE YOU HAVIN’ A GOOD TIME!’ are stock fucking standard”

I was lucky enough to have found myself surrounded by ‘true fans’ while at the concert. We were in golden circle, but at the back, away from the crowd of pumped up jocks and their poppe girlfriends, and with enough space around us to dance. It was amazing to see people around me go crazy for and sing along to oldies like Molly’s Chambers, Taperjean Girl and the Bucket. It reminded me why I was there, and why I fell in love with Calebs sometimes off tune voice so many years ago. I have to add though, it was incredible to hear the entire stadium sing along with Use Somebody, etc.
Mimi
I loved last night. Apart from the fact that there were five billion people and one licensed bar and no whiskey unless you want it mixed with coke, it was extremely well organised. I was in general standing, but off to one side near the speaker, and we made friends with the people near us, saved each other’s spots when we needed the loo, There was space, the sound was amazing, and being not too close to the people in front of me, I could see both the stage and the screens.
I was happy with the fact that they didn’t talk, because they played like champs and my two faves, Knocked up and Taper Jean Girl made me weep.
The only time the crowd did disappoint (as it did at The Killers) was that nobody shouted for an encore. I realise that the fireworks made it clear that it was over but come one, show that you loved it, shout until your throat is hoarse and they give in and play a final song.
Very well written though, and love the comparison to one of my faves, Isochronous.
Shirley
Awesome performance. Slick and professional is exactly what I paid for! All these people complaining that they didn’t know enough of the songs should have done their homework or stayed at home and listened to their one cd.
sheena
Who wants to go to a concert to hear the band talk all night. What an amazing set list, awesome sound. To bad for the girls who were wearing skirts short enought to see there futures and the “eh bru’s” in there wife beaters. Or the guys trying to hook up with anything that had a pulse.
Tyron
You are an idiot
Ignore everyone and just enjoy KOL. Who cares about the crowd
Darrell
I agree with your take on the crowd. I agree with the fact that it was well organized and controlled. I must however remind you that the sound quality was certainly not up to world class standard and KOL cannot call themselves rockers. They didn’t, it’s that simple. People paid a lot of money to see a mediocre performance. Not good enough!
Adronel
It’s so good to know that we’re not the only people who classify KOL fans as either the ‘Sex on Fire’ fans or the real ones! My friend had an arm wrestling match with the one bimbo next to her who never even sang along once…except probably with Sex on Fire. And when the drummer from Die Heuwels was on stage just before they’re set, one girl behind us asked whether that was the drummer from KOL…she almost got slapped…what on earth was she doing in the Golden Circle right in the front? That totally pissed me off. There should be some sort of system to filter crowds so that we don’t have to breathe the same air as the Top 40 Heroes. That would be cool. But besides the crowd…yes the best show probably ever!
Adronel
Oh and i was right in front of the Golden Circle and the sound was 100% and very very loud! Caleb’s voice was unbelievably good! They are so professional and i love that about them. If you’ve ever seen their Live at the O2 in London DVD then you’ll know last night was exactly like the DVD…because last night’s show is exactly who they are. The best!
Mikke
They were amazing, they are so talented and even if the crowd was somewhat drunk when the Kings came on the stage they dominated my every thought . I enjoyed the show! I agree that we didn’t pay that much money to hear them talk the show away, they did what they needed to do and did it with class and style!
timmy
Last nights show was incredible! Anyone that knows anything other than ‘sex on fire’ about KOL would be able to appreciate it. That show was as good as the live at the O2 show. The was KINGS OF LEON last night!
If I heard someone comparing KOL to David Guetta, I would get the party started, on their face!!!
Emma
Oh Nash… I couldn’t agree with you more. To be honest I had first heard about KOL when they released Only By The Night, but I was intrigued when I heard that they had actually been around for a while, and did some investigating. I own all their albums now and love every one of them. I love Sex On Fire and Use Somebody because I believe they are great songs. If their other stuff had got some airplay I think it would also be as popular. I was surrounded by a bunch of drunk-ass jocks ans their brainless girlfriends who didnt know a thing about the band. I was there in General Standing singing and dancing wildly to all the songs and the girls around me looked braindead. It was pathetic. Why can’t the people who aren’t die-hard fans go get a seated ticket and not waste space? I also despised teeny-boppers pushing through and sloshing their drinks all over me. I’m 19 but could never be like those teenagers. Camps Bay chicks shouldn’t be allowed to attend rock concerts like these! Overall I thought the concert was AMAZING. The sound was perfect, the lights and visuals were beautiful. Apart from the crowd, so worth the money. Thanks for a great review, I look forward to them a lot!
Matt
Like most others… Couldn’t agree more.
On the stage presence – having watched a few past live gigs (YouTube and DVD) it seems that’s standard. Looking at them perform they seem to be totally ‘in the zone’ as cliched as that may sound. To achieve that kind or near perfection they have to be absolutely involved in the music. Unfortunately that’s to the detriment of their presence.
In golden circle I thought the sound quality was pretty damn good! Having sat at the arse end of the stadium for Coldplay where the sounds wafted around and vocals were lost, up front is where you have to be. Or at least on the field.
As for the crowd – yeah, those people. They were annoying. Many punches held back and deep breaths. We were there to enjoy some great music from a band I absolutely dig. And I did.
As much as they were annoying, “those people” helped make it possible for us to see them. LIVE.
At a venue like that with a crowd of 40 000 it was always going to be a mixed bag. Without those 39000 sex on fire fans to fill the seats we may never have had the chance to see them.
Still – I can’t help but imagine: that set, in a more intimate venue, with a truly appreciative crowd…man!
Adronel
Matt – Wow…exactly what my friends and i were talking about,,,every word that you wrote.
Cam
Spot.on.Dude! Great review!
Ballsy
Hey Nash
The left hand side was soooo much better. Less idiot s and more people there for the music. Funniest part was looking back at the crowd when they played songs from their first two albums and see who could really sing along and not pretend to mouth the words
Was standing a few meters in front of you in golden circle. Completely agree with you on all the morons. We entered golden circle on the right with the rest of the whords and got very uncomfortable with who was standing around us. We decide to take walk round and try find some friends and like minded KoL fans
We saw KoL at Wembley arena in London, going on 4+ years ago. The bands interaction hasnt change and wont change. Its the way they are. Their stage setup has definitely improved a million fold. Loved the “instragram” type graphix on all the visuals. Well matched for the band and I think gave their performance the energy that the band never shows.
Great article dude
Danielle
I’m seeing them tomorrow night, and have been waiting for the review. Haven’t heard or read anything as of yet. This is a great article and you have confirmed exactly what I am afraid of…. the Sex on Fire/Use Somebody/ Jacked Up / Popped Collar Jock chicks and dicks. They will be there in their hordes. They’re going to irritate the living hell out of me… but I have to deal, for this is the reason why KOL are out here. It is their meteoric success attributed to their last two albums which has brought them here. They are a phenomenal band whom I adore and have been listening to for a good 7 or 8 years and am looking forward to seeing them. Fuck everyone else.
Troye
Nash – I nearly smacked some stoned punks for putting their girlfriends on their shoulders as the show fcuking started! They refused to put them down!! Look, I don’t mind having one at a time, I’m tall and can look around them, but what about my girlfriend who paid R600 for a show she cant see? Three people in a row is a bit much. How does one handle this?
Do I pop my collar?
(PS: Great review)
NikNak
I CONCUR!!
They played taper jean girl, and that alone was worth R590…
I have waited 6years to seem them Live.
The crowd might not have been true fans… but i only hope that those that only new sex on fire, when home with a education of what real music is.
NikNak
Clearly I cant spell or use grammar #fail
