Winter is here, supposedly.

By @RickBosch ‘The Professor’

Or so I have been told. I sit writing this in 34 degree heat, needless to say I’m probably not in the best mood ever. But I kind of am, because I’m hoarding music for the winter and the stash is looking pretty good. I seem to write one of these “winter” themed posts every year, maybe that says something about who I am as a person, but in all honesty, it doesn’t. I just like the winter, and in the winter, I like listening to music most of all.

A blast from my past, Ima Robot

A blast from my past, Ima Robot

By Rick Bosch: @RickBosch

By now I am fairly certain that most people have either seen or heard of the TV show, Suits. Yes? Yes. This post is not about Suits, rather it’s about how the show reminded me of a band which probably started my love affair with indie music. No, not Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr indie, the kind that hipsters listen to, the kind that blends electronic music with rock and roll. Anyways, let’s not get into genre-dropping, let’s get to the music, because Ima Robot piqued my interest and I’m ashamed to say I almost forgot about them, but then Harvey and Mike reminded me. This is the intro to Suits. It’s a song called “Greenback Boogie”, give it a quick watch/listen and we’ll continue after the jump.

Moving House – The thinking man’s pop

Moving House – The thinking man’s pop

I don’t like pop music. Well, that’s not entirely true, because I love anything Jarvis Cocker does, but when it comes to “pop music” and “melodies” I am generally a little apathetic. Reggae, yay or nay?

by Rick Bosch

This is something I’ve always wondered about, well, I say “always” I mean, “since I started listening to reggae”. I don’t think I was ever not a fan of reggae, I may not have known much about it, but it’s certainly not something I’d ever look down on, or turn off when someone turned it up.

One Night In Cape Town

One Night In Cape Town

by @rickbosch

There are few things as exciting as knowing that you’ll be seeing one of your favourite bands live, and recently (read “a while ago now”) I was lucky enough to get to do just that. The Eagles of Death Metal jumped a big ol’ metal bird and made their way down to the southern tip of Africa for Oppikoppi, luckily, they came to say hi in Cape Town as well.

Japandroids – My New Favourite Two-Piece Band

Japandroids – My New Favourite Two-Piece Band

by The Professor – @RickBosch

I have long had an infatuation with duos, from the White Stripes and the Black Keys to the bombastic Death From Above 1979 and more recently The Pack A.D and today’s featured band, Japandroids. The interesting thing about the last two bands is that they’re both from Vancouver and only use a guitarist and drummer. There must be a
shortage of good bass players in BC, but I’m definitely not complaining.
